From:

If you don’t care for your feet, you may struggle to perform day-to-day activities, have reduced mobility, and experience severe foot problems.

Why You or Your Loved One Need Foot Care Services

From living with serious health conditions to requiring regular maintenance, there are numerous reasons why you or your loved one may require foot care.

Living With Diabetes

As you age, managing diabetes can become quite challenging. MP Fortin joined Global News Calgary to discuss key areas those living with diabetes can focus on.

If you’re living with diabetes, you must maintain your feet daily as you are at a higher risk of foot issues and amputation.

If you show any signs of:

  • Bumps
  • Unbalanced temperatures
  • Dry or Shiny skin
  • Pain when walking, or more

You should consult a foot care professional rather than attempt to resolve your foot pain alone.

Experiencing Foot Pain

Fungal Nails

Toenail fungus commonly starts as a yellow or white spot under the edge of a toenail. As the fungus spreads, the nail can thicken, develop rough edges, and become discoloured. Toenail fungus can be challenging to treat as it can persist indefinitely and return after treatment. Although toenail fungus isn't typically dangerous, it can cause severe pain and lead to ingrown toenails, affecting those with reduced blood flow.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails can occur when the corner or side of a toenail grows into the soft flesh of a toe, commonly the big toe. People who experience ingrown toenails may feel pain, discomfort, redness, swelling, or infection.

Calluses

When the body is exposed to threats or stresses, the skin forms a thick outer layer to protect the area from any damage. This protection forms a callus-thickened area, commonly on the foot's toes, heel, and ball.

Foot Irregularities

Foot irregularities can create pressure points that can form calluses. For example, bunions expose the skin to rubbing and pressure, and hammertoes expose skin on the top of the toes to pressure and friction in the affected area.

Painful Corns

Painful corns are smaller calluses, often surrounded by inflamed skin. These corns often occur on the sides of toes that adjoin other toes, where constant pressure or friction is present. Removing corns as soon as possible is crucial, as when they get too large, they can cause severe pain.

About Our Advanced Foot Care Treatment Process

To ensure you receive the care you need and deserve, we follow a four-step process:

Assessment With a Foot Care Specialist

We will conduct a professional assessment of your foot health upon meeting. Each time our licensed practical nurse visits, we will assess your overall foot health and address any concerns from our last visit. We take great care in providing a comfortable experience.

Daily Foot Care

Our specialists will wash and thoroughly dry your feet using mild soap and water, including between your toes. Beyond your regular foot check-up appointments, try to wear clean socks, and change them daily to reduce the chances of blisters or athlete's foot. Always wear clean shoes and avoid going to public areas barefoot.

Toenail Care

Trimming your toenails regularly with sanitized nail clippers or scissors, at least every 6 weeks, is essential. At Ohana Care, our technique includes cutting your toenails straight across, not on a curve, and filing down any sharp edges using an emery board.

Avoid cutting toenails on your own feet if you cannot see them, have trouble reaching them, or have a loss of sensation in your feet. Instead, allow our caring foot health professionals to assist you with any toenail clipping.

Daily Foot Inspection

During your foot inspection, we will assess the tops, bottoms, and the surrounding area of your feet. Through this inspection, we look for cuts, blisters, bumps, dry patches, discolouration, ingrown toenails, and other foot irregularities to ensure positive foot health.

Additional Hand & Nail Care Services

You can expect your nails to become more fragile and brittle if you have thin fingernails and dry skin.

That’s why we also provide hand care;

  • We hydrate our clients’ nails using good hand cream on both your dry hands and nails.
