What is Home Care For Parkinson's Disease?

Living with Parkinson's disease involves navigating progressive changes in mobility, balance, and daily living. Parkinson's care services provide the specialized training needed to manage these symptoms safely, ensuring you or your loved one can remain comfortable and active in a familiar environment.

Parkinson’s Is More Than Tremors

Tremors are a common and easily recognized sign of Parkinson’s, but other symptoms can heavily affect the daily routine of Parkinson’s patients. Changes to balance, coordination, movement speed (bradykinesia), and sleeping patterns are also common symptoms. Comprehensive home care for Parkinson’s disease addresses all these aspects.

Why Medication Timing Is Critical

In order to prevent “off periods” and manage symptoms effectively, people living with Parkinson’s must take medication on a strict schedule. Our professional caregivers ensure doses are never missed.

The Role of Movement in Parkinson’s Disease Care

Staying active is vital for managing Parkinson's. As part of our in-home care for Parkinson's patients, our trained caregivers encourage safe exercise and movement to help maintain strength and flexibility.

  • Medication Reminders: Providing timely reminders to ensure critical medications are taken as prescribed and to help prevent “off” periods.
  • Exercise Support: Encouraging prescribed exercises and daily movement to help manage stiffness and maintain mobility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Home care for Parkinson's disease is specialized to address the specific motor and non-motor symptoms of the disease. Our caregivers understand the importance of "on" and "off" periods, the patience required when movement slows (bradykinesia) or when "freezing" occurs, and the critical importance of medication timing. At Ohana Care, we heavily focus on mobility support, fall prevention, and maintaining a consistent routine.

Yes. We know that movement is medicine for Parkinson's. While our caregivers do not replace physical therapists, they can assist and encourage you or your loved one to take safe walks, complete your prescribed physical therapy care plan, and maintain an active lifestyle to help preserve strength and mobility.

Absolutely. Our caregivers can prepare nutritious meals tailored to specific dietary needs, including bite-sized portions and soft foods, to reduce difficulty eating. We can also provide standby assistance during meals to prevent choking hazards and act as a safeguard.

We strive to provide consistent caregivers whenever possible. We understand that individuals with Parkinson's benefit greatly from routine and familiarity. Having consistent personalized assistance allows care providers to learn your specific symptoms, anticipate your needs during "off" times, and build a trusting relationship.

Our Health Care Aides can provide timely medication reminders and assistance with pre-measured blister packs to ensure doses are never missed, which is vital for managing Parkinson's symptoms. If you require someone to administer injections or manage complex medical care, we can provide Registered Nurses (RNs) or Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) for that level of care.

Ohana Care is designed to be flexible. We do not require long-term contracts, so you can adjust your care plan as needs evolve. Whether you need to adjust schedules to match changing sleep patterns or increase hours for more consistent support, we are here to adapt with your care journey. We just ask for 24 hours' notice for schedule changes.

We have a 4-hour minimum per visit to ensure we can provide deliberate, purposeful care that covers all daily needs, from personal grooming to social connection. However, there is no minimum number of visits required per week, so you can book care as often or as little as you need.
