Palliative Care In Calgary

When your loved one is in the process of letting go of life, it’s important they have someone present who shows care and compassion. Ohana Care is honoured and proud to provide palliative care services to you or your loved one during this time.

What Is Palliative Care?

Palliative care, also known as end-of-life care, is care for those experiencing a life-limiting illness or supports those ready to pass away from old age. As your loved one nears death, you may notice that they have less energy, sleep longer, eat less, or withdraw from friends and family members. This is normal and necessary for the dying process. Talk to your health care provider for more information about palliative end-of-life care. We are here to listen and explain the care process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Leverage your personal experiences with your loved one because you know them best. Act as their advocate and be present when possible, engaging in conversation and laughter to reduce tension and foster closeness. Remember, silence can also be a powerful form of communication when words are difficult to find.

Palliative care often involves significant changes. You may notice increased sleeping, reduced appetite and thirst, confusion, and restlessness. Breathing patterns and heartbeats may become irregular, and there might be a loss of bowel or bladder control or constipation. Other common changes include chest congestion, variations in skin colour and temperature, muscle twitching, dry eyes, and difficulty focusing. An elevated temperature and pain, often indicated by agitation or a furrowed brow, may also require symptom management. These changes are part of the natural progression at this stage.

In the Calgary zone, palliative care is available in four settings: a hospital, a personal residence, hospice, and a care centre. At Ohana Care, we specialize in providing palliative care in your private residence or a continuing care centre. If your loved one is currently in a hospital, Alberta Health Services will offer care through its palliative care unit in Calgary.

End-of-life care typically begins soon after a person is diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, ensuring comprehensive support from an early stage.
