Aging in Place Made Accessible with Self-Managed Care Funding
Self-Managed Care funding allows for alternative options to receiving personal care, home support services and respite care. Additionally, it is provided by Alberta Health Services. The program provides resources to directly pay for and manage personal care and home care support services.
How do I access self-managed care?
- If you are already receiving care through Alberta Health Services, ask your Case Managers to be transferred to self-managed care.
- Seniors not currently receiving care can self-refer or have a third-party provider refer through the intake line at (403) 943-1920.
- Seniors unsure it’s the best way to go can inquire through the intake line (403) 943-1920 about self-managed care. In addition, you can attend an information session.
How much does the funding cover for the cost of care?
- The amount covered is on a case-by-case basis. In other words, a Case Manager from Alberta Health Services will assess your needs and current supports to make their decision.
- Self-Managed Care can be used to pay caregivers directly or utilized as a subsidy to hire a private home care company like Ohana.
- This funding covers more than half the hourly price.
What are the benefits to me?
- You have a greater say over who provides the care and when.
- For example, when you hire Ohana Care, we screen and hire the caregivers so you don’t have to.
- Should a caregiver be sick or go on vacation, a private company can offer an alternate caregiver.
- Ohana Care has a team of nurses that can assist the caregivers in the community.
- You can age in place longer. Most importantly, you can do so safely with the support services provided.
- Ohana Care keeps detailed records of services. We can invoice you daily, weekly, monthly. In addition, we can provide a yearly statement for tax purposes and to report back to Alberta Health Services.
What if my health declines?
- Your Case Manager can come and reassess your needs to determine if more funding is required.
