Why You Or Your Loved One Need Foot Care Services

Whether you require regular foot maintenance or are living with a serious condition, there are numerous reasons why you or your loved one may require foot care:

Living With Diabetes

Managing diabetes in adults can be quite tricky. MP Fortin joined Global News Calgary with key areas to focus on.

Those living with diabetes are at an increased risk of foot problems and amputation. Therefore, it’s essential to maintain your feet daily.

If you show any signs of:

  • Dry or Shiny skin
  • Unbalanced temperatures
  • Pain when walking
  • Bumps, or more

You must seek attention from a foot care professional rather than attempt to resolve your foot pain alone.

Experiencing Foot Pain

Fungal Nails

Fungal nails usually start as a yellow or white spot under the edge of a toenail. The fungus can spread, causing nails to become thickened or discoloured and can be challenging to treat, persist indefinitely, and can return after it has been cured. It is not ordinarily dangerous, but it can be painful and cause unsightly nails, which may lead to other foot problems.

Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails occur when the corner of the toenail grows into the soft flesh of the toe skin. Ingrown toenails are extremely common and can mostly be found on the big toe. They can cause extreme discomfort, redness, swelling, and at times, infection.

Calluses

Calluses are a way of skin protecting the body from complications. In places where the outer layer of skin is exposed to stress, the body forms a callus-thickened area layer of skin, covering the exposed area. Calluses are commonly formed on the toes, the ball of the foot, and the heel.

Foot Irregularities

Foot irregularities can create pressure points that can lead to the formation of calluses. Some common foot irregularities include hammertoes or bunions, which both expose skin due to pressure and friction points.

Painful Corns

Painful corns commonly occur on the sides of toes that adjoin other toes, where pressure or friction is present. Corns are often surrounded by inflamed skin and look smaller than calluses. If you think you have corns, you should get book foot care for seniors as soon as possible, as they commonly become larger and more painful over time.

About Our Advanced Foot Care Treatment Process

At Ohana Care, we follow a four-step process to ensure you receive the care you need and deserve.

Assessment With a Foot Care Specialist

During our first visit, we will professionally assess your current food health. Each time our foot care nurse visits, we will determine your overall foot health and address any concerns. At Ohana Care, we take great care in providing a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Daily Foot Care

Our expert specialists will thoroughly wash and dry all areas of your feet using mild soap and water. Beyond your regular foot care maintenance, wear clean socks daily to reduce the chances of athlete's foot or blisters. Additionally, always wear clean shoes and avoid going into public areas barefoot.

Toenail Care

Trimming your toenails regularly is extremely important. We recommend you trim them at least every six weeks with sanitized nail clippers or scissors. At Ohana Care, our technique includes cutting your toenails straight across without a curve and filing down sharp edges with an emery board.

If you have trouble reaching your nails, can't see them, or have a loss of sensation in your feet, please avoid attempting to cut your own nails. Instead, allow our foot care professionals to assist you with any toenail clippings.

Daily Foot Inspection

During foot inspections, we check the tops, bottoms, and surrounding areas of your feet. While inspecting, we look for cuts, blisters, discolouration, bumps, ingrown toenails, and out-of-the-ordinary signs to ensure healthy feet.

Additional Hand & Nail Care Services

If you have dry skin and thin fingernails, you may notice your nails become more brittle and fragile as you age.

At Ohana Care, we also provide hand care:

  • We’ll hydrate your nails using good hand cream on both your dry hands and nails.

Frequently Asked Questions

Seniors are susceptible to circulatory problems, bone density loss, or dry skin on their feet. Due to this, they can unknowingly sustain an injury which may lead to infection if not cared for properly.

As one gets older, foot sweat glands become less active, which causes drier, more rough skin.

Seniors' most common foot problems are corns, calluses, bunions, ingrown nails and heel pain. The best way to maintain foot health as you age is to visit foot care professionals regularly.
